I have been working on creating the technology behind my version of an "aficionado website" The site is like a supremely enhanced blog that includes newsfeeds, affiliate marketing sales, adsense advertising, link directories, embedded graphics, video and flash, and tight integration with social media like Twitter and Facebook. I launched http://FoundOnMars.com last month and I am now working daily to add the remainder of planned content and features that allow me to have the most exciting and complete resource about the current exploration of Mars.
For this site I use features that allow me and my site members to embed features they have located on Mars using the Mars layer of Google Maps. I can blog, embed videos from YouTube and Vimeo, I have embedded live TV sources to NASA and ESA. and most recently I have added the most complete aggregated set of news feeds coming from over 100 space news sources, automatically categorized and presented with the latest web browsing features updated automatically every 15 minutes.
This business model is easily translated to any area of personal interest, for example a Golfing website could be created, or a Longevity website, any site where an operator with a passion for their subject matter can immerse themselves and have all the tools at their disposal to drive traffic and to create multiple micro-revenue streams.
The caveat of course is, the "Person with the Passion", is a necessary ingredient. You cannot just hire anyone to operate the site, the magic comes from empowering an individual with knowledge and a devoted interest in the subject matter who has social networking skills, communication skills and a desire to be deeply involved in the Internet world of their subject. In my case, my life long interest in space exploration along with lucking out on an unfilled niche (Mars) has opened a fun opportunity for me.
A real interest and excitement over the content of your web enterprise will serve you better in today's Internet which is being driven far more by online social relationship building than the old search-engine optimization methods of bringing passive traffic to a static webpage.
Those days are gone.
